50 years ago there was a vision. Bringing young people together from
around the world to live and work together was a step towards peace
and understanding. Facing them with the opportunity to give service
to others made idealistic aims practical as well as philosophical.
Selecting students regardless of race, religion or family wealth
ensured a fair and democratic admission to the colleges.
This ideal took shape at Atlantic College in Wales and now over the
intervening years the idea has taken wing and colleges have opened
in every continent – all with the same principles – The United World
Colleges (UWC).
And now a new college is growing into existence in Dilijan, Armenia.
Located on the ancient silk route and at a crossroad of Europe, the
Middle East and Russia its historical credentials are clear and for
UWC it gives a new focus in a part of the world where peace is often
a rare commodity.
A new and exciting campus will welcome students from around the
world and they will take away with them not only the principles which
guide UWC but also a love and respect for people of the Caucasus.
